John Hawks is a paleoanthropologist who specializes in the fossil and genetic record of human evolution. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and is currently the Vilas-Borghesi Distinguished Achievement Professor of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is a co-author, with Lee Berger, of Almost Human: The Astonishing Tale of Homo naledi and the Discovery That Changed Our Human Story, about their work in the Rising Star Cave of South Africa.
