Karen Coates writes primarily about food, environment, health, and human rights in developing societies. She has a background in anthropology, which she has always thought a natural match for journalism. Coates is a senior fellow at Brandeis University’s Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism, and her latest book, co-authored with her husband and partner Jerry Redfern, is Eternal Harvest: The Legacy of American Bombs in Laos. Coates, a former correspondent for Gourmet magazine, is an avid cook and chile connoisseur, and she periodically teaches Southeast Asian cooking classes. She lives in New Mexico.
